"Lok Adalat" literally means People's Court. It is a forum for amicable, consensual settlement of disputes based on conciliation. The first Lok Adalat was held in Una, Gujarat in 1982 on the initiative of Justice P.N. Bhagwati. The LSAA 1987 gave statutory recognition to Lok Adalats.
